This guide to information resources in the humanities was created
to provide students and aficionados with a list of noteworthy reference
works that will help them jumpstart their research. The list of books, web sites,
and databases that I have gathered is by no means comprehensive. It is simply
a collection of resources that I have found to be particularly informative, easy to
use, and authoritative. This guide began its life as a series of annotated bibliographies
that I compiled while in Angela Courtney's "Information in the Humanities" class at
The School of Library and Information Science (IU). The call numbers for these books are
specific to the libraries at
Indiana University - Bloomington (as are the databases); however,
these resources will be available to students at
most medium-to-large sized universities. Please feel free to contact me if
you've found any resources that you think should be a part of this list. Happy hunting!

Edited by Samuel J. Rogal. Published by Gale Research Inc., Detroit, 1991. IU Research Collection (Reference) PN6075 .R64 1991
In this thick volume, we have a straightforward, ready-reference resource that lists the major literary events from 1450 through the late 1980s. The first part of the book lists events by the days of the calendar. For example, the entry for January 12th lists the birth of Jack London (1876), and the death of Agatha Christie (1976). The second part lists events by year. The entries are divided into four categories: births, deaths, events, and publications. The annotations are short (from a sentence to a paragraph) and concentrate on factual information. A selected bibliography is located in front, and a name/title index is located in back. The book would be useful for someone inquiring about what was happening in the literary world at any point during the last five-hundred years. The author holds an academic position and has authored several other books in this field. The information seems accurate, though a more current edition would be nice.

The Encyclopedia of Eastern Philosophy and Religion: Buddhism, Taoism, Zen, Hinduism.

IU Research collections and Undergraduate (Reference) BL1005 .L4813 1994
A compact encyclopedia of theologies, deities, religious texts, movements and leaders.
Useful for beginners, but may not fulfill all of the needs of scholars in these fields. Entries are organized alphabetically and are labeled according to what religion they are related to. Terms are translated into English where direct translations exist. Also includes pronunciations and many illustrations. Bibliographies (in back) are categorized by religious/philosophical subject, and whether they are primary or secondary sources. Philosopher's Index
(Online database). Vendor: Cambridge Scientific Abstracts. Coverage: 1940 to present. Available through the IUB Libraries "Find Information" page: http://www.libraries.iub.edu/findinfo/. Accessed: 1/28/06.
A quote from the IU libraries web site for this database:
"An online bibliographic database that indexes over 480 journals covering most areas of philosophy. Records include citation information (with abstracts, most of the time) to journal articles and books. No full-text is available. The interface is easy to use and displays subject descriptors on the results page, which gives the searcher a good idea of a record's relevancy without having to view the record itself. Searches can be limited by date ranges and/or subject. One can also search within specific journals. The database is relatively easy to use, especially when trying to revise a search, since hyperlinked descriptors are prominently displayed. This resource is great for researchers that are willing and able to track down print copies of the indexed articles. Undergraduates, however, will usually settle for nothing less than full-text."
